About Toolvia
Toolvia builds free online tools that do one job properly. We started with vehicles, because the information people need most, like a car’s specs and safety recalls, is public but hard to read.
What we do
Our VIN decoder takes the official records the US government keeps on every vehicle and turns them into a report anyone can understand. You’ll see the specs, what each character in the VIN means, open recalls, owner complaints and crash test ratings, without a signup or a paywall.
Where our data comes from
Every lookup is made live against public databases run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA): the vPIC vehicle catalog for specs, and NHTSA’s recall, complaint and NCAP crash-test databases. We don’t change the data. When something isn’t on file, we say so instead of guessing.
How we write our guides
Our guides are written and checked by the Toolvia editorial team. We stick to what can be verified, explain things in plain language, and update pages when rules or data change. If you spot a mistake, please tell us and we’ll fix it.
Independence
Toolvia isn’t affiliated with NHTSA or any vehicle manufacturer. Brand names are used only to describe the vehicles our tools work with.
